Every year, Birmingham Libraries participate in the Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge which encourages pupils to read six books over the summer holiday period. Entering the challenge is simple:
- Go to one of the participating libraries mentioned below.
- Collect a “Read to the Beat” sticker booklet.
- Read any six books of your choosing.
- Collect rewards for meeting targets along the way by reviewing the books you have read.
In a couple of weeks’ time, a representative from Boldmere library will be coming into school to promote the event which begins on Saturday 4th July and ends on Saturday 5th September. When the children return to school in September, we will be celebrating pupils who have achieved the challenge with a special assembly.
Participating local libraries and opening hours:
- Boldmere Library: Tues, Thurs and Sat, 9am-1pm and 2pm-5pm
- Mere Green Library: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri and Sat – 9am-1pm and 2pm-5pm
- Walmley Library: Mon, Weds and Sat – 9am-1pm and 2pm-5pm
Reading regularly over the six-week summer holiday is highly beneficial to your child’s learning and development. It helps to maintain and strengthen the reading skills they have worked hard to develop throughout the school year, while also building fluency, vocabulary, comprehension and confidence. Even a short period of daily reading can make a significant difference, helping children return to school ready to learn and reducing the risk of losing progress over the long break. Most importantly, reading together can be an enjoyable way to foster a lifelong love of books and learning.
