Phonics Reading Scheme

 

At Wylde Green Primary School all children in Reception and Year 1 have a discrete daily phonics lesson using the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds phonic scheme to teach phonics and reading. Every child will be working at their own level and will be grouped according to the Letters and Sounds phase they are working on. This will range from phase 2 to phase 6. Phonics is important for children to become effective readers. Our children are taught phonics as part of a language-rich curriculum so that they develop their wider reading skills at the same time.


Research shows that when phonics is taught in a structured way – starting with the easiest sounds, progressing through to the most complex – it is the most effective way of teaching young children to read. It is particularly helpful for children aged 5 to 7. Phonics workshops for parents of children in Reception and Year 1 are held in the autumn term to support reading at home.

 

In EYFS and Key Stage 1, our classes use a wide range of reading schemes including Oxford Reading Tree, Rigby Star, Project X and Bug Club. The reading schemes are colour-coded into ability bands using the Book Band system to teach. As the children move into Key Stage 2, they begin to read Ginn Pocket Readers and Bug Club and eventually children have a free choice.

Notes on POWer projects:

 

Children are given a sheet with a set of POWer projects each term, with each project worth a set amount of points. Children are NOT expected to complete all of the projects – instead they should complete some of the projects so that they earn between 5 and 8 points each half term.

 

Each week (or sometimes less often than that if the projects will take longer) your child’s teacher will ask them to focus on one box on the POWer project sheet and choose a project from that section to complete.
